Reading Article Reflection
After reading “Performative Literacy,” I have a better understanding of the strategies necessary to becoming a competent reader.  Overall, I think I am an average reader and excel in some areas but lack in others.  I don’t always tolerate uncertainty, because I like to be able to understand every aspect of what I am reading.  While reading this article, I began to understand that it is not necessary to understand everything right away, but it is important to reread to gain more knowledge of the material.  This year I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone and gotten better at taking risks to interpret the writing.  From these documents, I have learned that I need to ask myself questions before I read and while I am reading to make sure I comprehend the information.  I also need to work on directing my reading process.
In addition, I notice that my reading style depends on the book I am reading.  For example when I read my World History text book, I try to understand all background information before diving in.  While reading, I focus to make sure I don’t miss any important events or dates.  In contrast when I read a book for pleasure, I often worry more about enjoying the story than catching every minute detail.

This year I have taken time to annotate our novels.  It has helped with the open-book quizzes and writing essays at the end of each book.  Last year was the first year I annotated, and it has gotten easier over time.  If anything, I annotate too much, because sometimes I get carried away with my highlighter.  I need to work on annotating the important pieces of information and not the extraneous.  I will definitely continue to annotate because it is useful when trying to find information, and I think it helps to better understand the story.
